Jerry N. Uelsmann is an American photographer, and was an early exponent of photomontage in the 20th century in America. Uelsmann was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1934. While attending public schools, at the age of fourteen, he became interested in photography. He believed that through photography he could exist outside himself, to live in a world captured through the lens.
In component 1, I explored the work of Jerry Uelsmann when looking at composite image making and I felt that some of his work may inspire me when looking into the theme of juxtaposition for component 2. His work consists of objects suspended in various different landscaped background and often, his work could be linked to juxtaposition in many different ways.
In this image, there appears to be a boat on the water on a cloudy. Additionally to this, a spherical shape is suspended just above the boat and in the water. This image could connote a juxtaposition between shapes but also between the way that images are stereotypically taken and the creative ideas that some other people have with images.
In this image, it is apparent that this image is a combination of a tree and 2 hands holding a bird nest. This image could connote a juxtaposition between a natural landscape or natural aspect of the world and human qualities or human nature. Additionally to this, and in my opinion it could represent a juxtaposition possibly between nature and nurture and this could be symbolic of the birds nest with an egg inside.
In this image, you are clearly able to see a natural landscape of a beach with a human eye that has been photoshopped into the foreground of the image (in one of the cliffs). The connotations of this image could be that there is an omniscient being looking over everyone but in relation to juxtaposition, it could suggest a juxtaposition between nature and man.
In this image, it is shown that there is a landscape of a lake and in the sky of the image, it is apparent that the sky has been manipulated to look like a reflection of the lake, with a floating rock in the sky. This could connote a contrast or juxtaposition as it is usually the sky that is reflected on the water and this also could challenge the way that some people perceive photographs or images.Comparative Images
John Stezaker
John Grenville Stezaker (born 1949), is an English conceptual artist. His work is surreal in tone and is often made using collage and the appropriation of pre-existing images such as postcards, film stills, and publicity photographs. In the early 1970s, he was among the first wave of British conceptual artists to react against what was then the predominance of Pop art.
In this image, it appears to be an edited image of 2 people in the same position sharing a similar facial expression. The image is also edited in black and white, or has been taken using black and white film. The connotations of this image could be a contrast in emotions or a contrast in the way people feel about each other. This image is interesting as it is not split in the way that people would think to split an image, which would be in half. Stezaker has cut the image diagonally, contrasting the usual editing method for most people.

These images appear to be 3 portraits that have been edited and manipulated where the women and man's faces should be within the composition. Additionally to this, the postcard style images are in the shape of the face so it doesn't look out of place or random, but looks as though it fits with the composition. The connotations of this image may be that the people are hiding from the world or from their true feelings. I like this style of photography and editing and as my shoots progress, I plan to use this style as inspiration for my theme of juxtaposition photography.
Naro Pinosa
This Spanish artist born in Elche began to experiment with digital collage just two years ago. Now, 24 months later, his work has reached a multitude of international publications and thousands of followers who do not lose track on social networks. Naro Pinosa is 36 years old and is now an author of works that mix all kinds of inspirations, from Hellenic art to contemporary photography. This artist is one of the artists that I discovered on Pinterest when researching juxtaposition photography.

All of the above images depict two different images that have been photoshopped together to create a new composition. His work mainly consists of a human model and an inanimate object or other landscape to reflect the same position as the model. The images give connotations of different feelings but also that all of the models possibly have different personalities to what they show in the image. Out of all 4 of these images, only one of them is showing their eyes, which could connote they are hiding for something. For example, the black and white image of the male model and the ghosts could suggest that internally, there is a conflict of emotions and that he is experiencing something dark. Alternatively, the image of the black and white image of the model and the vibrant colours of the secondary images could suggest that outer appearances do not reflect inner feelings and thoughts.

Alana Dee Haynes
Through a sequence of intricate gestures, Alana Dee Haynes transforms photographs with delicate pen strokes. A collection of photographs serves as the artist's canvas to explore the human form and opportunity to apply texture. Her work shows a juxtaposition between the human form and doodle-like drawings and cartoon form.

These images are all relatively similar in style and depict portraits that have been manipulated either digitally in Photoshop or physically using pen drawings and doodles. This shows a clear juxtaposition of human form and cartoon form, and possibly between external and internal emotions and how someone feels on the inside and how they feel on the outside. The black and white could have connotations of sadness, and this is further emphasised by the facial expressions of the models used.

Born in Germany in 1989, Alma Haser is now based in London and on the southeast coast. She is known for her complex and meticulously constructed portraiture, which are influenced by her creativity and her background in fine art. Alma creates striking work that catches the eye and captivates the mind.

These images are from an artist that I discovered through the website Pinterest when researching into the theme of Juxtaposition. Her images are something that I was drawn to and the style is a style I would like to experiment with at some point during the preparatory shoots. In all 3 of these images, it appears to be the same picture layered on top of each other, with the facial portion of the image crumpled and physically manipulated. This style of photography could connote a juxtaposition of emotion or a juxtaposition between the physical self and emotional self. This is further highlighted through the use of the emotionless and deadpan facial expressions.
