Shoot 3

Date: 02/03/18

Idea: The main idea that I have for my third shoot is to use my images to show a juxtaposition between the weather. For example, taking a picture of the same location when there has been snow, and then going back and taking another image when the snow has melted. This shows a clear juxtaposition in the weather. In the editing process, I may layer put both of the images together side by side to make the juxtaposition within the images even clearer.

Improvement Required Images

This was one of the images that I felt needed improvement due to my camera settings being wrong and not appropriate for the time of day. In this particular photo, my ISO setting was at around 200, which allowed too much light into the image and created an over exposure. If I was to improve on this image I would set the ISO at the correct setting, which, for the other images, was between 1600 and 3200, as it was a cloudy day when completing this shoot.

This is another image from my 3rd shoot that I felt needed improvement due to the fact that the image was too dark and my camera was not set on the right setting. This picture was taken in a place that has shelter from natural lighting, so the ISO settings that were correct for the other images was not correct for this specific location and didn't let enough light into the image. If I was to improve on this image, I would aim to set my ISO at around 400 as I feel as though this would give me enough light to be able to use it as one of my final images.

Final Edited & Best Images

AO3: This image was created from 2 different images of the same location with different weather. I felt as though that this would be a good idea for juxtaposition as it shows how different weather conditions are able to affect the same environment so differently. When shooting these 2 images, I had the intention to Photoshop them together in the style of Frank Gohlke and his 'aftermath' series, as this is a photographer who's work I am heavily inspired by, especially in these first 3 shoots.

AO3: This image is a combination of 2 images from my 3rd shoot that I decided work together better than separately. One image is the ground after the snow has fallen and the other is after it has melted. I thought that this would be a good idea for juxtaposition due to the fact that it shows how different an environment is able to look with 2 different weather types. I feel as thought this image does work well as I was able to get the balance between showing the snow and the environment outside of my house with no snow.

AO3: This image is a combination of 2 of my images, and the main aim of this image was to show the snow at the front of my house and the back of my house. With this particular image, I decided to experiment with my images in the style of John Stezaker, as I have layered both images on top of each other and made one image smaller than the other. I feel as though this shows juxtaposition between environments and also loosely matches the style used by John Stezaker in his work.

AO3: This is another image in which I decided to experiment with Photoshop and the style of John Stezaker as I am using 2 images to create one composition. This image shows the juxtaposition of the snow and no snow environment, but also shows a juxtaposition between the blur and sharpness of the images used to create the juxtaposition. Although it does not mirror exactly the work of John Stezaker, it loosely reflects the style of his work.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

The main idea that I had and the main reason for choosing juxtaposition was that I felt that around Harlow and in my own environment, I was able to create interesting images that I would be able show fit the theme of juxtaposition. In this particular shoot, due to the snow and weather, I decided to experiment with a contrast between the different weathers, such as a juxtaposition between snow and no snow, and how the weather affects the environment. I felt as though this was a good idea as I was able to create a shoot around the weather and make the most of the environment around me, which is something that Frank Gohlke did with his surroundings. Because of this, I aimed to follow Frank Gohlke's style closely, as his representation of Juxtaposition displays the images side by side to show the before and after shots. I also loosely based my images on the work of John Stezaker and placing 2 images in the same composition to accentuate the juxtaposition.

The images that I retrieved from my time exploring the theme of Juxtaposition turned out well and I felt that overall, I captured it well. However, I felt as though I could have improved on a few things to make the shoot stronger. For example, I feel as though I could have focused more types of weather rather than just having a shoot of snow and normal cloudy weather, as I felt that would have explored the theme of juxtaposition even further, and would show more experimentation. If I was to improve on this shoot, I would take more pictures so that I am able to have a wider variety of images to choose as my best images and also have a bigger selection to be able to edit and use as my final edited images.

AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

For all of the above images, I used a CANON EOS 1300D. I feel as though I am now more confident about shooting in manual mode as I know how to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings to be able to capture different images in the studio to show juxtaposition. For most of these images, the flash was not on due to me shooting in natural light and I adjusted my camera setting accordingly to the light.

In order to improve on the images that I took, I decided to import them into Photoshop in order to enhance them and improve on their composition and the way that they have been shot. In order to do this, I decided to change the contrast of some of the images and experimented with the hue and saturation of some of the images. I also adjusted the contrast and saturation of the images to allow them to fit in with the style of my photos, which reflect the style of the images in my image bank. Additionally to this, I used the layering and blending tools to be able to create the image of different weathers in the same location, which helped me to show a clear juxtaposition. I also experimented with adding another image into the composition, which relates to the theme of juxtaposition but also to my artist research.

The screen grabs that I have selected show how I used Photoshop to create juxtaposition images. To do use this, I used the Curves tool and the levels tool, gradually adjusting the colour sliders to get the clear contrast effect. With my images, I edited most of the images in colour, adjusting the contrast and brightness of the image to create the best images for juxtaposition. I also experimented with the layering tool to create side by side images in the style of Frank Gohlke and his 'aftermath' series.

Photoshop Process

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

The artist research that I did was extremely helpful in the fact that I was able to gain an understanding of the different artists and their different styles. Knowing about their style and about any movements they may have been involved in helps me to interpret their work and understand what they were thinking when they took a certain image, and also helps me to recreate these images in my style. Researching various images that they have created helps me to try and recreate these images and then shooting my own images in their style. For example, my research on Frank Gohlke and researching the images of this photographer helped me to understand juxtaposition and what types of images I could create, still linking to their style but also reflecting my own style in the process. Additionally to this, I was able to get a better understanding of juxtaposition photography and how you can use this type of photography to capture different aspects of the composition. I feel as though I did relate enough to the photographer as I took inspiration from Frank Gohlke and his 'aftermath' series, showing the different in weather and the effects that it has on the environment. However, in order to improve I could have experimented more with his style to create an improved look on my images.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Overall, I think that I have produced a good series of images inspired by my research and image bank for my third preparatory shoot for juxtaposition. The final images produced were changed by developing the contrast, saturation and using the healing tool and blending or layering images to create an interesting effect onto my juxtaposition photography. I think if I was to improve on this, I would try and take more photographs, as this would help me to have more of a variety of images to choose from when selecting my best images to edit and choose as my final images. I would also try to experiment with different photographers so that I have varied experimentation throughout my project.
